The G20 or Group of Twenty is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union. It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

  1. The G20 was formed in 1999 in the backdrop of the financial crisis of the late 1990s, which particularly affected East Asia and Southeast Asia.

  3. The G20 represents all the inhabited continents, 80% of the world GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the world's population.
  4. The G20 or Group of Twenty is an intergovernmental forum consisting of 19 countries and the European Union.
  5. The G20 has no permanent secretariat.
  6. G20 Sherpas: Agenda and work are coordinated by representatives of the G20 countries, known as 'Sherpas', who work closely with the finance ministers and governors of the central banks.
  7. The presidency of the G20 is rotated among the members every year.
  8. The country that holds the presidency works together with its predecessor and successor, also known as the Troika, to ensure the continuity of the agenda.

Frequently Asked Questions

The current chair is held by Indonesia. The 2023 and 2024 summits will be hosted by India and Brazil respectively.

The G20 secretariat will be responsible for the implementation of overall policy decisions and arrangements needed for steering India’s forthcoming G20 Presidency.

The 17th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit will take place in15-16 November 2022 in Bali.
